Jon has been involved in education in one way or another for the last 10 years, from his first job as a guitar teacher to his current position as a Bushcraft instructor and founder of Ironwood Bushcraft. He has taught a wide range of students including SEN, Alternative provision and adult learning students. Jon started Ironwood Bushcraft in the summer of 2020 as a way to share his passion for the outdoors with a wider audience
The name Ironwood Bushcraft stems from Norse mythology, where the Ironwood was home to trolls who bore giant wolves. Luckily, we don't have any trolls, nor giant wolves in our woodland - but we maintain the idea that when you leave the woods after spending time on one of our courses, you will emerge a wolf, and your group a wolf pack!
Nature has a way of bringing us all together, and whether it's by working as a team, learning new skills together or just sharing the warmth of a fire, we know you'll leave us closer than before!
From an early age, Jon has always loved spending time outdoors, and being able to share the joys of nature with others has always been a goal for him. He came across the concept of bushcraft whilst on a trip with the school he works at, and began a long journey of learning and refining his skills to become the instructor he is today.
Jon has a wealth of experience in the subject, having spent time honing his bushcraft skills in every condition the British weather can muster, and has enjoyed every minute - though at -5 in an improvised shelter and no sleeping bag, he did begin to have second thoughts! It is his firm belief that time spent in the woodland is time very well spent - regardless of the conditions.
Jon is also a keen historian, often participating in Anglo Saxon living history events. Most of the structures on site are built using hand tools, using materials sourced from the surrounding woodland - the very way our ancestors of old would have built. He is also a musician and plays a range of ancient nordic instruments, as well as the guitar. Don't worry though, there will be no 'Kum ba yah' by the campfire!
